It’s all a bit beige? …Yes, I went there. If I'm completely honest, the Commodore 64 is quite a new experience for me. Back in the day, nobody in my circle had one, so my nostalgia for it is admittedly sparse. However, I was definitely aware of its existence—how could I not be? I remember distinctly how I used to pore over pictures of it in my mother's home shopping catalog, Brian Mills, for those who might recall. It was one of those glossy pages that introduced me to what many considered a gem of the era, and even without personal memories of it, I can't help but feel a certain reverence for what it represented.
Interesting & New Games
This, believe it or not, is not a list of top ten games for the C64, or even necessarily good games for the C64. This is simply a list of games that caught my attention because either a knew them on other platforms or they looked cool. (If you want a Top 10, Google it, there are hundreds out there…)
Games are are still frequently being made for the Commodore 64. What I would consider AAA Games too. Case in Point: Age of Hero’s. http://www.psytronik.net/newsite/in dex.php/c64/108-heroes
Some brave genius of a soul, is out there making flicker- free versions of Elite for various platforms. BBC model B, Master and Commodore 64.
This is an ‘Arcade’ remastering of Ghosts and Goblins for the C64 and it’s really rather good.
In some respects, the 2600 version is prettier than the home computer ports of Ghostbusters, but the home computers ports tend to be more sophisticated.
Everybody was Kung-Fo fighting. Except Ninjas obviously, they would have been doing Ninjitsu presumably. And me? In the Last Ninja games, I reduced that down to simply repeatedly kicking my opponents in the gonads.
A very nice re-implementation of Donkey Kong on the C64.
An extremely fluid and fun version of Buggy Boy was to be had on the C64.
This arcade port of Asteroids feels a little sluggish, but it’s extremely beautiful and plays well.
I was astonished to find out that Pitfall II was ported to so many systems including the C64.
Rick Dangerous. I can’t tell whether I hate this game or not. There’s something addictive about it, yet there’s also something intensely irritating about it.
Included here because Count Duckula always made me laugh. (My little ducky-poos) I have literally no idea what’s going on in the game mind you.
Wizzball appeared on a variety of platforms and it’s good fun, with an interesting bouncy game mechanic. That said, I always found the main character slightly creepy, which put me off as a child.
‘Mega Tank Blasta’ is in the same vein as Commando, Jackal and Ikari Warriors. It’s good fun and a new(ish) game for the C64. https://richard- tnd.itch.io/megatankblasta64
A Nintendo game, licensed by Atari, running on a Commodore machine. Has to be sign of the end-times…
C64anabalt is an official C64 implementation of Canabalt, which is an Indi game released for a bunch of platforms. It’s addictive, elegant and weirdly hypnotising… https://rgcddev.itch.io/c64anabalt
