Opinion
So, the first question must be what’s the
difference between an Oric-1 and an Oric
Atmos?
Technically, not much from I what understand.
They Atmos’ keyboard is better, a lot better and
I prefer the aesthetics of the Atmos over the
Oric-1.
The other difference between the two, is that
they can be incompatible. Yes, software made
for an Oric-1 is far from guaranteed to run on
an Atmos and vice-verse. Which, to anyone new
to the Oric systems, is somewhat staggering, but
there you have it.
Fortunately most software released had (and
has) versions for both. But in my opinion, I
would lean more towards getting an Atmos,
because of the keyboard, because of the slightly
less buggy ROM, (especially if you want to load
from a real cassette tape apparently) and some
of the sexiest modern software releases seem
to only be available for the Atmos, which does
appear to be the machine of choice for the
modern Oric community. I’m happy to corrected
on that.
Add-ons
Cumana Reborn works with both
Oric-1 and Oric Atmos. It allows
all the loading options of a
Floppy Disk Drive, with none of
the pain…
Atmosfear
…Nothing to do with the VHS video
based games from the ‘80s. Sadly.
I was aware of the name and I
remember a chap called
‘David’ had one. Although I
think that was an Oric-1
Back in the day, the Oric did not get a version
of Elite. Not to be disheartened, fans of the
platform released their own version “1337” in
2010. It’s not a straight port either, it’s
genuinely a tribute. So, clearly it borrows
heavily from the original game, they have put
a huge amount of effort into making it their
own.
Stormlord on the Oric is another fan made
port. And it’s quite beautiful, too.
Frog Hop. Not to be confused with some
other game that involves a frog crossing a
road, then a river and avoiding traffic,
crocodiles and sinking turtles.
