Play it again, Sam… These puns are getting embarressing. This teeny-tiny little console, with its 8bit CPU and 16bit graphics is an absolute joy to explore. They’re relatively cheap and played host to some amazing games. Quick note, though. All the games start at ‘hard’ and only get more difficult.
R-Type on the NEC wonder machine is very very pretty and also, very very difficult.
Anyone who endured the Amiga, ST and anything other than the Mega Drive port of Out Run, look away now. The PC Engine version is surprisingly good..
Splatter House was a very special game. The fullfilling sense of smacking a zombie against a wall with a big stick and it splatting there, is fully realised here.
Chuck Rock II, son of Chuck Rock has you running around the neolithic age headbutting things to death as a small toddler.
Saint Dragon is extremely well delivered on NEC’s diminutive games console.
You can’t beat a bit of Raiden and the PC Engine version is brilliant. As usual it’s extremely tough, not as tough as the psychotic version on Atari Falcon, but tough, none the less.
Atomic Robokid is not the same as the Robokid that appeared on most other platforms, but it’s essentially the same game and looks pretty amazing.
I played Thunderhawk on the ST, and was pretty pleased with it. The PC Engine version is on another level.
